Here’s the last long Saturday ride before the Michigander starts: The One Helluv a Ride in Chelsea, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society.
There’s a choice of 6 scenic paved routes:
- 15- or 30-mile Fun Rides
- 39 miles
- 64 miles
- 76 miles
- 100 miles
- Lunch and snack stops
- Entertainment
- Embroidered patch
- SAG support
- Mechanics on duty
- Quality custom merchandise
- Friendly volunteers
- Post-ride ice cold watermelon at Chelsea Fairgrounds
I’ve heard about this ride for years and this year will be the year I want to do it. I’m planning for the 64 mile route. The club says the routes are “over tree-lined, paved roads in Washtenaw, Ingham, Jackson and Livingston counties. The routes wind through rural and recreation areas on beautiful rolling terrain, and vary enough to appeal to a broad range of bicyclists.”
This will be an early ride, meaning I’ll be leaving my house in Oakland Township no later than 6 AM.
The 15- and 30-mile Fun Rides start and end at Portage Lake State Park, near Grass Lake. Take I-94 Exit 150 North (see map). There is a small daily use fee for car entry into the park.
The 39-, 64-, 76-, 100-mile rides start and end at the Chelsea Fairgrounds. Day of Ride registrations are $30. There is free parking at the Fairgrounds. Check-in: 6:45 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Again, I’m planning on doing the 64-miler. Details and maps can be found here.
