Detroit bike lanes in the news

The new bike lanes in Southwest Detroit have been getting of media coverage lately. The Detroit News ran the article “ Detroit becoming friendlier to bicyclists ” last month. Sarah Pappas , 27, who lives in the city’s Woodbridge neighborhood, commutes by bike to work in Corktown several times a week

LMB Featured in the Bright Side, Episode 4: Michigan on the Move

LMB’s John Lindenmayer was featured in the latest Bright Side episode, “Michigan on the Move” in the Complete Streets in Ypsilanti and Lansing segment. Bright Side is produced by CEDAM (Community Economic Development Association of Michigan) and tells the stories of the transformative, inspiring work that is happening within Michigan communities. LMB Provides Recommendations to SOS on What Every Driver Must Know

The Secretary of State’s office recently asked LMB and others to provide input regarding the bicycling specific content within their driver safety handbook, What Every Driver Must Know.  LMB Associate Director, John Lindenmayer along with the LMB Education Committee provide extensive input on the booklet from simple suggestions such as including a bike related image on the cover and incorporating more graphics throughout, to specific language recommendations regarding dangerous scenarios such as unsafe passing and cutting off a cyclists with the right of way. Turn Signal Revision Passes Out of Committee

We are extremely pleased to report that yesterday the Michigan House Transportation Committee voted out HB 4728 with LMB’s recommended Substitute language.  LMB testified before the Committee last week encouraging a simple amendment to the bill which would allow cyclists to signal right turns with an upturned left arm OR by pointing to the right.  The original language of the bill would have mandated that Michigan bicyclists could only point to the right, outlawing the current upturned left arm method. Of the 32 states who have made this simple update to their vehicle codes, no state has outlawed the universally recognized upturned left arm signal.
