Gears shift and chain jumps while coasting

March 15, 2010 by cjo

Hi, I bought a barely used mountain bike from a friend. It rode great with no problems for a while, then I started noticing the rear derailleur loosening – like I was changing gears and making a clicking noise – whenever I was coasting and not pedaling.

Gear cables either too loose or too tight, never in between…

March 7, 2010 by debbieb

Hello everyone, I’ve recently started up overhauling an old claud butler bike I have laying around, but I’ve run into a snag, already! and what a surprise – it’s with the gears. I’ve bought a new front and back mech, followed the instillation manual that comes provided with both the parts and also watched countless videos online. Everything seems to be setup correctly, but I’m having problems shifting the rear mech, allow me to explain: When the chain is in the highest gear, the gear cable is extremely loose.

Rethreading New Chain

February 22, 2010 by jcooley

I feel like I’m being an idiot, but having read multiple things on how to put-on a chain and watched many videos I still can’t manage it. I’m using a Sora rear and front dérailleur and am putting on the same chain as I took off, so it should fit! I’m having trouble when it comes to threading the chain through the rear derailleur – I can’t get any tension in it and the derailleur won’t pull against the chain

Alivio Rapidfire Front Shifter.. Can only shift to 2nd gear (middle ring)

December 4, 2009 by tmlaurie1

My alivio Rapidfire front shifter seems to be stuck to the 2nd gear (indicator) no matter how I shift it to the 3rd gear. I tried adjusting the cables down to the front derailer (following the nice videos here on adjusting derailers) but it seems the shifter is the problem

Hi. I’m pretty much a complete newb with bikes, so please excuse me. I bought a cheap Huffy just to get around a bit, and I think I stripped the inside of this while I was riding one day

Hi, First, welcome . Is there any way to possibly take a couple of pictures of the derailleur, shifter, and bike ? Watching the videos pretty much gives a good basic idea.
