Michigander 2009 – Friday (the finish)

What a finish.

Picture perfect weather began our final stage of the Michigander today, no wind, blue skies and temps in the very-comfortable-for-riding mid-sixties as we left Rockford for the 51 mile trek to the finish in Edmore, we encountered the first of what would be nearly 20 miles of rolling hills. After pretty much pancake flat terrain for most of the circle tour, the hills were enjoyable for most.

Good climbs to the top, nice descents that left enough momentum to get half way up the next. Total climbing was nearly 1300 feet over the ride, according to my Garmin Edge 705. Click here for a display of today’s stats and a map.

Sam Kennedy raced through again to finish his ride early and be waiting to whistle and wave and cheer us as we made our finish right where we started last Saturday.

I say this every year, of course, but this was the best ‘Gander yet.

I can’t believe how good of friends I have made on this ride. Most of us only see each other for a week a year. I miss them already.

I’ve volunteered to work with Barry Culhan and the sponsoring Michigan Greenways and Trails Alliance to put together a committee to help promote next year’s tour. This is such a wonderful way to see Michigan, promote trails, cycling and good living in a great state. We need to really get the message out next year.

Here’s a roundup of pictures from the final day. Click any image to see it larger. Check the Community forums later for more pictures and comments on the ride from the various participants.
