Tour de Oakland Township dirt ride this Saturday

Oakland Township, just north of Rochester, MI, has announced plans for an extensive network of bicycle trails and pathways that will traverse every section of the township, linking parks, schools, shopping centers and neighborhoods. The showcase of the plan is what planners are calling “The Loop,” a 23.5 mile route that pretty much covers every corner of the community.

While the plan itself is some years from development, much of “The Loop” can be ridden now… at least the dirt and gravel roads that will parallel the course can be biked to give a feel for what it will be like. With Oakland Township Planner and fellow biker Jim Foulkrod in the lead, we’ll set off at 8:30 am Saturday June 27 from the Bear Creek Park on Snell Road.

You’ll need fat tires, though nothing too extreme. Road bikes probably wouldn’t work, but hybrids and mountain bikes should do fine. There are some hills, especially on the return to Bear Creek.

Please post under comments if you’ll be coming so we know how many to expect.
